Basketball: Stepinac to honor six at Thursday’s Hardwood Dinner


Stepinac High School will honor six new inductees at 6 Thursday night at the school during its third annual Hardwood Club Dinner. All former Stepinac basketball players, fans and friends of Stepinac are invited to attend the event.

The inductees are:

Tom Parrotta, Class of ‘84: Canisius College head coach, former Stepinac and Fordham star; scored over 1,000 points in high school and led team to Archdiocesan championship; played pro ball in Portugal.
Frank Magaletta, ‘66: Former Stepinac and Fairfield star; led the CHSAA in scoring, named first-team all-CHSAA and became Stepinac’s second-ever 1,000-point scorer.
Bert Hammell, ‘69: Merrimack College head coach for 30 years, during which he has amassed over 400 wins; served as a chief scout for the Milwaukee Bucks; was a Division II All-New England selection.
Brian Hammell, ‘71: Bentley College star was a two-time Division II All-American and became a third-round draft pick by the Bucks; head coach at Northern Illinois after working as an assistant at USC and Iowa.
Bob Hammell, ‘72: Former Stepinac and Byrant College star.
1991 CHSAA “B” championship team: Finished with a 24-4 record, undefeated in league play, sweeping Iona, Fordham and Mount, and defeated rival White Plains and PSAL power Boys & Girls of Brooklyn.

The new inductees will join a group that includes: Marty ConlonTim O’TooleArt WhiteFred QuartlebaumFrank HendersonTom Carney and the 1960 CHSAA championship team.
