After being named team MVP of the Stepinac hockey team, senior Shaun Hanlon has turned his attention to lacrosse with the spring season now in full swing.

As one of the core returning members of Stepinac's lacrosse team, Hanlon hopes to lead the Crusaders to the A league championship.

"I don't expect anything short of being A league champs," said this week's Con Ed Scholar-Athlete of the Week award winner. "I think that's a very reachable goal for our team. We feel we can compete with every team that we will play against this year."

Wasting no time, Hanlon netted four points (three goals and an assist) in each of Stepinac's first two games of the season. Though the Crusaders dropped the first game against Pearl River, they rebounded nicely against New Rochelle with an 8-3 win.

"That first game against Pearl River was rough," Hanlon said of Stepinac's rally which fell short in a 7-6 loss. "Being that it was our first game, our offense is in the process of getting better. The second game, against New Rochelle, went a lot better though. We came out with a lot of intensity."

In his first lacrosse season as varsity captain, Hanlon is taking on a more serious role with the team.

"Last year I'm not sure he took the game as seriously as he's doing this year," coach Adam Rubin said. "At Stepinac we are setting a new tone for our lacrosse program and he will be the stepping stone. He elevates everyone's game. He's become a great leader on and off the field.

"I think he's got determination when he goes to the goal, and he's got a great shot," Rubin added. "He's worked on his shot a lot. It's something that he and I discussed last year, taking good shots."

Hanlon has been trying to get his hands farther out and away from his body and he has also been trying to shoot sidearm more and picking his spots.

Being the definition of a true scholar athlete, Hanlon is the valedictorian for the Stepinac class of 2010.

"It's a great honor and I'm very excited about that," Hanlon said. He also joked and said the only negative thing about being valedictorian is that if he screws up in school now, kids will say 'Oh, yeah, and he's the valedictorian.'

Hanlon's key to balancing his studies and his busy athletic schedule — consisting of high school lacrosse and hockey, along with travel hockey as a member of the Westchester Mariners (who finished third in the state) — is to take naps in the day and also stay very organized.

"Sometimes it means some late nights to get all of the work done," he said. "It's a lot of hard work and dedication."

He is still undecided as to where he will continue his education in the fall, but some of the schools he will choose from are Quinnipiac, Siena, Ionaand St. Joseph's.
