Stepinac beats Fordham Prep

Jake Thomases

Stepinac is moving on to the CHSAA semifinals after a 5-3 win over Fordham Prep this afternoon at Fordham.

Steven Martinez hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth that gave a downtrodden Stepinac squad new life. Fordham put up a 3-spot in the top of the inning that left the Crusaders down 3-2. Martinez’s triple got them a base away from the tie. Sure enough he would score the tying run.

Greg DiGiacinto knocked in Eddie Martinez with the go-ahead run. Stepinac added another on an error.

Starting pitchers Michael Bradshaw and Sal Lisanti had a scoreless duel going until the fourth when Stepinac finally got to Lisanti for two. But, aided by an error that loaded the bases with no outs, Fordham took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

Donato Signore pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.

Stepinac faces Monsignor Farrell in the semifinals today at 4 p.m. at Fordham. Fordham drops into teh losers bracket where it will take on St. Peter’s at 7 p.m. Site for that one is to be determined.

Colleague Casey Tolfree will have the story in Monday’s paper.
